Aloe vera is well know for its cooling properties caused from the juicy liquids inside the plant. It's classified as a perennial type succulent plant belonging to the Lilaceae family. Succulents hold liquid for long periods of time in order to survive in hot climates that go long periods without rainfall. Many people use it internally for treating ulcers. Even though many people believe that it works for this, it has still not been evaluated or approved by the FDA.

Medicinal Use

What many people do not know about Aloe is that it can literally improve the communication between cells in your body! According to studies mentioned in the book "Beating Cancer with Nutrition", glycoproteins found in Aloe "may play a key role in promoting healthy communication within the cell and between cells." This is an absolutely astounding finding. There are many other studies that can be found online regarding this notion, from academic sources as well. Utilizing this information in your own creatively scientific healing practices can be a great benefit to you.

Aloe vera is most commonly known as a topical treatment for cuts, burns, abrasions, etc. It's use dates back to ancient alternative healing practices. It's even mentioned in the "Ebers Papyrus" from the 16th century BC. The Ebers Papyrus is, "an Egyptian medical papyrus of herbal knowledge dating to c. 1550 BC." ( wikipedia ). It can be harvested in small portions throughout the year.

Cultivation

I will be adding new images to this page this year. The cultivation of Aloe is very easy to accomplish. You just need good, rich dirt, with good drainage. It can be grown by simply and gently separating one of the growing shoots from the rest of the plant and then transplanting it. Whole sections of root can be pulled out of the ground and then replanted. It dies off in the winter and then grows back in the spring. It requires little watering. In Florida, I leave it in partial shade and very rarely have to water it.

How Plant Based Medicine Works

Like many other plants found in nature, Aloe very contains compounds which can't be seen with the naked eye. Phytochemistry is literally the study of the medicinally active pharmacological chemicals that plants produce. Much of the worlds most effective modern medicine is not made by man, rather it's synthesized from plants. Opiate pain medication is a prime example of this. Opiates are extracted from the Poppy plant.

When it comes to dealing with health issues, finding treatment should be our number one priority. Having an open mind to medicine is necessary in the search for future breakthroughs. If science and observations both demonstrate the power of natural healing compounds, should society not embrace the benefit of these discoveries? Today, this sort of activity is considered remarkable to the researchers fortunate enough to study these compounds.
