Californica Poppy Eschscholzia californica

california poppy plant

California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica)

The scientific name for this species is Eschscholzia californica. It certainly lives up to its name, being the state flower of California. This ethnobotanical is considered mildly narcotic. These naurcotic effects are induced by pharmacological phytochemicals inside the herb. These precious alkaloids demonstrate a large variety of psychoactive and medicinal effects. Native Americans also used this healing tool as a pain reliever, also known as anesthetic in medical terminology. The foliage of this plant is brewed into a relaxing tea which many report useful for dealing with insomnia.

California Poppy is very simliar to the Opium Poppy, yet obviously not identical. It's literally related to Poppies, being another member of the Papaveraceae family. The chemicals produced by it are similiar to that of real opiates which are synthesized from (Papaver somniferum). The leaves were also prized among Native Americans as a medicine. The pollen of this plant can and has used cosmetically. The seeds have been used in culinary dishes. Extracts made from the species are shown to have sedative and anxiolytic effects. This means that it's very calming to the mind and body.

An Easy Entheogen To Cultivate

It's a species that's very easy to cultivate because it's considered an invasive weed. This means that the plant is very hardy and easily spreads and takes over a landscape. The plant should be cultivated in organic material free of toxic pesticides and other chemical additives. To create your own compost for cultivating this natural remedy or any plant really, collect organic matter from the earth like pine-straw, leaves, grass clippings, weed clippings, etc, and allow them to rot in an above ground pile. You can also add fruit and veggie left overs to the pile. Allow your compost to age until it's broken down very well. Keeping the compost pile moist will allow it to decompose faster.

Botanicals Vs. Alcohol

There are plenty of ways to relax after a hard day of work, or even for vacation time. Alcohol is a legal and mainstream drug, even though many consider it to not be a drug due to repetative brain-washing campaigns. Alcohols effects can also be devastating. While alcohol is legal, and many see it as an alternative to drugs that is not the case. Alcohol is a drug. I have known people who can't go a day without a drink or their body begins to shake. These same people have told me that their bodies will literally shut down without alcohol. Other friends have told me they have heard from reputable sources and documentaries that alcoholics can die from not getting alcohol. I was amazed to hear these things because I was un-aware of them before.

Entheogenic plants on the other hand have a history of use as a means to treat drug addiction, as medicine, and as recreational intoxicants. You should still do research and use caution when dealing with these entheogens. Legal alternatives that are drug-free, synthetic free, and "designer drug" free are out there. There are many plants that naturally produce medicinal or psychoactive effects. These effects range from sedative, to stimulant, psychedelic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-cancer, and so on. Don't be fooled by the main-streams lack of interest in these facts. Even Aspirin is mass produced thanks to the bark of a tree known as the White Willow Tree

Two other common botanicals that are believed to have effects on the human opioid receptors, or mildly narcotic effects include Opium Lettuce and Kratom leaf.
