Potential Benefits of (Schisandra chinensis): Hepatitis; soothing nervs; anti-aging; adaptogenic; Central nervous system stimulant; nootropic; antioxidant; aphrodisiac
Herbalist suggest Schisandra berries (Schisandra chinensis) for a lot of things. It's said to have the potential to help people who suffer from Hepatitis. It's used by alternative practitioners to help sedate irritated nerves, redirecting energy where it's needed. The ancient Chinese used this natural remedy for centuries. They believed that it sustained youthful vigor. The berries are considered potentially adaptogenic by herbalist making them similar to Ginseng as a stimulant for the central nervous system. Herbs in this category are believed to increase brain efficiency, improve reflexes and accelerate rate of endurance. Some remain skeptical although research has been done from both sides of the bias. In all my years of marketing these products one thing I can tell you is that these berries are often found in Aphrodisiac mixtures ( supplements for sex drive and stamina ).
Is there science behind Schisandra berries? (Schisandra chinensis)
Many people believe that alternative medicine is a joke, and I'm not saying that it WORKS for sure, but It's my belief that it does.. BUT this is my belief. I can tell you that there is in fact scientific inquiry behind herbs, and research has and is done to investigate this premise though. What a lot of people fail to know is that plants produce pharmacological chemicals. Phytochemist isolate and study these chemicals. ( see my citations ) Schisandra berries and Schisandra chinensis plants produces chemicals known as lignans that appear to have the potential to protect the liver by stimulating cells that create valuable antioxidants. This is not the only plant that produces pharmacological constituents. In fact, you will be amazed once you discover what's really happening in the world of medicine today. The ancient healers that people have long laughed at now have science to back them up.
I think it's a pretty miraculous finding when something from the earth like a chemical in some Schisandra berries (Schisandra chinensis) can be investigated for the potential to stimulate cells which produce antioxidants. This fact is further proof that hippocrates wise statement, "let food by thy medicine, and medicine by thy food", may in fact hold truth. The Chinese medicine men and women held these berries in high esteem, and for good reason. It has many more potential medicinal qualities too. It can also be utilized in infusions, which are basically combinations of different plants that work together synergistically.
Schisandra in herbal recipes
I came up with a really good recipe that I like to use for an herbal aphrodisiac. I'm not saying it works because I'm not aloud to but it seems like it does to me. I take equal amounts of Damiana, Sassafras, Ginger, Ginseng, and Schisandra berries and either powder them as finely as possible, or buy them that we already. I use Vodka for my tincture solvent because it naturally seems to make people frisky as is. ( You may have a particular liquor that works best for you but you want something high in alcohol content ). In Herbalism Ginger is used for digestion so I figured it would help boost it plus it has been mentioned in several books of mine for its use in Chinese medicine as an aphrodisiac! I'm pretty impressed with the results. Maybe one day I'll patent this blend if someone doesn't do it before me.
What I find most interesting about ancient discoveries such as Schisandra is that people simlpy believed in things that proved effective. If something was right on time and time again, they noted that it was what appeared to be at least, truth. There are many things that science can not prove and plant based medicine is not one of them in my opinion. On the other hand, I believe we should be more open about other things that science has not yet proven and research them. Just because it has not been proven by science, does not necessarily mean that it's not so. Perhaps one day we will discover otherwise.
