Cacao; Chocolate; Theobroma cacao
Pure Chocolate

Despite the fact that Chocolate has often been condemned, there have been numerous studies that suggest it's actually very healthy. I personally find it to be a feel good food. It's loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, nutrients, and even contains some other quite interesting constituents. I have created certain herbal infusions which utilize this food to combat the vasodialation properties of other botanicals, but this is just a belief of mine, not solid science. A chemical produced by the Cacao plant known as theobromine is said to have very similar effects to that of Caffeine. It's also found in the Kola Nut which was the original source of flavor and caffeine in old school Coca Cola recipes. These were the days when Coca Cola still contained Cocaine made from the Coca Leaf.

Calendula Flowers; Calendula officinalis
Marigold Flowers

Calendula can be used as a natural pesticide in the garden. It also has many believed medicinal properties and is used by herbalists for such conditions as skin disorders. Read More For topical applications I use either a tea, or a tincture. I use it to repelle mosquitos as it supposedly contains citronelle like Lemon grass. It's very easy to come by but depending on where you get it, it may not be organic ( live plants that is ).

Acorus calamus
calamu plant

I personally use calamus as a medicine. The Native Americans used it ceremonially and had a lot of what you could call "lore" associated with its use. My Native American friends use it in DIY house hold cleaners. It's very easy to grow and thrives in moist swamp land climates. It's one of the few plants that you can't kill over-watering.

California Poppy; Eschscholzia californica
California Popppy Flower!

The California Poppy is the state flower of California. It's also very similar to the Opium Poppy. Native Americans found use of this sacred plant, using it as a natural pain reliever. Chemicals present in the plant have been isolated and studied. I personally like to combine it with Opium lettuce. ( Neither of these plants contain actual opioids, nor are they narcotic in nature ). It's still quite the seller and has applications in many cultures throughout history. I like to use it in an infusion with Mullein for pain, when I'm not in the mood for Kratom. It's can also be appreciated simply as a beautiful flower. I would be curiuos to learn about its symbolism.

Cancer Bush; Sutherlandia frutescens

This highly medicinal plant originates from South Africa like many others. Many people believe that it has the remarkable ability to cope with cancer yet I refuse to make any medical claims. This is where the common nickname "Cancer Bush" originates. Aside from this, it has been traditionally used by herbalists for a large number of ailments including: fever, chicken pox, the flu, rheumatism, stomach ailments, and liver problems. I became very interested in this stuff because of what herbalists say about it. I decided to combine it with my other favorites and try it in the event that I became sick with the flu or something which rarely ever happens. I will include citations about any studies on the fully detailed page on this botanical.

Cardamom Pods; Elettaria cardamomum
Cardamon Pods

Studies suggest that regular consumption of cardamom may help prevent colon cancer. It also has a vast history of use in ancient Ayurveda medicine. Cardamon can also be used as a culinary spice, adding flavor and aromas to Indian and Asian cuisines. Read More It has a very robust flavor that's spicey, and a bit salty. You can actually nibble on it like a sunflower seed. I'm surprised they're not sold that way. It's not a bad taste on its own! I would be interested to find out how this stuff can be utilized in the culinary arts by using nothing but intuition and trial and error!

Cascara sagrada Bark; Rhamnus purshiana
cascara Bark

This bark is typically made into a decoction. A decoction is made by boiling roots or barks for an extended period of time. Cascara contains 1,8-dihydroxy-anthracene, a highly complex medicinal compound. I became interested in it to enhance certain strain of Kratom for a nice relaxing nights sleep. It supposedly acts as a powerful laxative so be careful and use very small amounts if any!. It should not be used frequently. Talk to a doctor first!

Catnip; Nepeta cataria

catnip herb

Catnip is not just for cats. Although it has the remarkable ability to send Cats into a total state of psychedelic ecstasy, it also has some believed calm and tranquilizing effects on human beings. Chaga;Inonotus obliquus ( page coming soon )

chaga mushroom sun tea

Chaga Mushrooms are considered a super-food and one of the most powerful forms of medicine on the planet. Siberians refer to it as "Gift From God", and "Mushroom of Immortality". Chaga is believed to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune-stimulating properties. These medicinal mushrooms may ( not will ) be able to help treat inflammatory bowel disease. They are also mentioned in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology 2008 for showing promise as a treatment for diabetes. I can't say that they have a good taste but I've made a tincture out of them which I find very useful. I mix it with Goldenseal and save it for times of need ( cold, flu ). I also find this useful on occasion when I feel like for whatever reason my body is off and needs a boost, or there's little food in the house and I want antioxidants.
