Although not too many people today have heard of Mugwort, it's still a very well known oneirogen and medicine. Since the ancient times of the Romans, the Greeks, and even the Chinese, Artemisia vulgaris has found its place in alternative medicine. It offers a wide range of medicinal applications as well as a few mildly psychoactive ones to date. It's closely related to Wormwood, which was used in Absinthe brews.

Relation To Absinthe

I believe that the Absinthe potion is not psychoactive due to one specific ingredient, rather it's the selection of complimentary ingredients that work synergistically to create the effects. The quality and potency of each additive makes or breaks the brew. Since it's related to Wormwood ( both belonging to the same family ) it also possesses many of the naturally created pharmacological compounds of wormwood (like thujone). Thus, these two when used in psychoactive brews, potions, concoctions, infusions, or whatever they may be called, share almost identical properties.

This is a lot like the Magical Ayahuasca Brew used by Shamans. The Ayahuasca vine is used in combination with others to make the sacred brew active. This understanding of the Absinthe potion is not typically displayed by individuals in the western world today. I believe it was actually once illegal in the USA! I wonder why that is? Makes you wonder what this Thujone constituent is really all about doesn't it? I would be fascinated to one day try some pure thujone..

Since both strains (Artemisia absinthium and Artemisia vulgaris) have been used in various Absinthe recipes, it suggest an underlying connection with the two. Throughot history, they both have reputation of being an oneirogen ( inducing dream activity ). Absinthe has been used by some of the most creative minds in the world. This is further evidence that it does indeed has some mysterious yet potent effects on consciousness. Celebrated absinthe drinkers include the painters Lautrec, Gauguin, Manet, Van Gogh and Picasso, along with the writers Rimbaud, Verlaine, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allen Poe and Jack London. I believe that its psychoactivity may be noticed while under the spell of sleep and in the dream state.

Folk Lore or "Metaphysical Properties"

Today science doubts "folk-lore" so much, that they won't even try to prove it. Instead, they attempt to disprove it, and then make faulty conclusions based on their lack of research and vision. Is science meant to discover all of the answers though? OR are we not as intelligent as the life-force of reality and all-important as our ego's have lead us to believe. Historic lore: Some cultures believed it to be a divine tool used in smudging, astral projection, lucid dreaming[which has been scientifically proven], and other altered state of consciousness. It's also been burned as an incense.

On a final note I'd like to add that this herb should not be used everyday. Always remember the Arndt–Schulz rule which states that for every substance, small doses stimulate, moderate doses inhibit, large doses produce negative effects. Basically, any poison in a dilute enough dosage has medicinal effects, while any medicine in large enough dosages can have negative effects. A prime example of this is antibiotics. They work by administering a small enough amount of a substance that is potentially deadly. This induces an intense immune response by the body.
