White Sage - Salvia apiana

Salvia apiana ( White Sage - a relative of Salvia Divinorum), was used by Native American groups on the Pacific coast in America. The seeds were the main active ingredient of pinole. Pinole was a staple food. It's more than likely loaded with beneficial bacteria to improve the human microbiome as well. It just makes sense. We can say that remedies made from roots, are generally observed to be the most effective. Perhaps micro-organisms within soil are more important than we think.

The Cahuila would harvest large amounts of Salvia apiana seed and mix them with wheat flour and sugar for gruel, or buscuits. Even the leaves and stems were consumed by the Chumash and other tribes. Multiple tribes would use the seed to remove foreign objects from the eye. The roots themselves were used as a powderful medicine. Salvia apiana leaves were also burnt in ceremonies for purification. It was in general a vauable natural health tool that helped them to survive and thrive.

While exploring the earth and the human spirit, the Cahuila encountered the sacred white sage, and learned of its healing potential. Their instincts helped the world gain important knowledge regarding medicinal and psychoactive plants. This, and the user other ethnobotanicals by various cultures around the world, has led to modern scientific phytochemical studies and inventions on some of the most fascinating substances and medicines on the planet. Perhaps there is a lesson to learn from those who moderners consider "primative", and that is learn to sense what is real and that which is fake, aka immitation.

Folk Lore

The Native Americans had some other beliefs associated with the sacred White Sage incense besides the observed medicinal and nutritional value. They believed that white Sage would expel evil spirits and bad vibrations from auras and the general environment. It's believed to bring strength, wisdom, and clarity to the mind. It was even stuffed into dream pillows. Alternative health practitioners everywhere find it to be a necessity in their practices.

Oneirogen

White Sage is believed to be an oneirogen. Oneirogens are plants or substance that induce intense dream activity. They are often used to aid in the art of lucid dreaming. Even the scent or inhalation of certain natural incense have a historic reputation for inducing vivid and prophetic dreams. The phytochemical constituents in the plant are observed and believed to be what makes this possible. It contains: 1,8-cineole, camphor, b-pinene, a-pinene, delta-3-carene, camphene, limonene(also found in myrrh), myrcene, and terpinolene. Each constituent has its own health benefits.

Alternative health should really be referred to as just "health". The art of using holistic herbs and natural health remedies to tweak our biological circuitry towards optimal states of being is an ancient way to maintain overall well-being. Utilizing these natural tools to our advantage is necessary for our spiritual and physiological evolution. Don't accept suffering and illness as part of the "norm", because it's far from it. From what I can observe, the world as a whole, is far from aramagedon medicinally, with the way it grows from the earth and all. Learn all you can and optimize your world.
