Many of the remedies on this website originate from Africa. The culture there is immersed with the supposed enchanting and medicinal powers these plants are believed to have. They are believed to sooth and heal the biological circuitry of human beings, as well as to enlighten the soul. Phytochemical research on these medicinal plants back up and explain their potential benefits. So, I would like to introduce you to yet another sacred tree from Africa called the Baobab tree. In this blog post I will talk about the facts, both related to science and lore, and share with you some actual DIY applications shared with me via my friends in the Native American culture, as well as a Shaman friend that I met in Africa.

Baobab doesn't taste too bad at all. I use it as an ingredient in infusions for colds and the flu. It can be used in culinary applications also and has been known to be eaten as a relish. It really has hardly any taste what-so-ever, so adding a pinch to just about anything is not a bad idea. I've even added it to oatmeal. Tree barks go well together, so it blends very well with Cinnamon, and Sassafras. Different cultures have found Baobab a place in their cooking. I'll get into the benefits shortly further down the page but first I want to provide you with some inside information on how it can be used, aside from the ideas I've shared in this paragraph.

So an incredibly beautiful Native American girl that I know got together with me one day when I received an order of Baobab bark. She said she was more than familiar with it, and hadn't used any in a while. She told me that in her culture barks are typically boiled until the water is as rich with the color as possible. This is believed to be potent medicine. She thought that it went well with Opium Lettuce and Wild Dagga so we tried that. I thought it would be cool to add Sassafras because it's one of my favorite barks. So the recipe we came up with is: Sassafras, Opium Lettuce, and Wild Dagga. She said together, they have the power to make one feel better when sick. We drank some as we watched the sun set on a beach in Florida. It was as magical as it sounds.

An African friend of mine shared a Baobab laced honey that he made as well. It was the most incredible thing that I've ever tasted. It had this bite to it, a little spicey. Immediately I noticed a difference in my whole body, and almost a "head high". My head was tingly, and it's hard to explain.. I felt like I ate 300 oranges or something. It's not unusual in their culture he says, for people to add plants to their water for bathing. This sounds a lot like baptisms doesn't it? Remember, Baobab is said to be LOADED with vitamin C. This is a much easier way to get large amounts of the vitamin. It's important tho to respect future generations of this tree and not have it destoyed for financial interest. I make it a mission to support companies that care for the biosphere.

Baobab Tree Health Benefits

It's used by shamanic-like cultures in Africa for reducing fevers. In my opinion this stuff is like natural tylenol. It also has tremendous nutritional value. Baobab contains 50% more calcium than spinach! It's loaded with antioxidants and has three times the amount of Vitamin C than that of an orange! Using it in a tincture form can be an easy and quick way to supplement these natural and essential chemicals. I particularly think that it goes well with Echinacea and Feverfew because of its believed fever fighting benefits. I am including in the citations some references I've obtained via scholar.google.com and other academic databases, books, etc.

The leaves are edible and it also produces fruit. Elephants even find the Baobab tree useful, consuming the juicy wood below its bark. Many herbalists today are just now discovering its benefits. Ancient African folk medicine has spread to the west, and now American herbalist are utilizing these plants and their benefits because of what these other historic cultures have first discovered. I'd like to see it planted and grown around the world. This will help to counteract the careless destruction of wilderness around the globe. It will also bring more medicine to the west. We need all the natural benefits that we can get. I hope to spread the word about this tree, as well as protect its species. I want to see more phytochemical studies published on this great gift to humanity.
